The concept of Children’s Parliament was introduced to Learners. The Children’s Parliament teaches democracy and citizenry skills to Learners while giving them an official forum to voice their own concerns and solutions to local and global issues. The aim of the session was to inform youth about political processes and how decisions are made. Through the Children’s Parliament program, Learners were able to organize a variety of social and educational activities such as health and fitness events, environmental activities or multicultural events. In this, Learners desirous to participate enrolled their names and got themselves nominated.
Learners were elected for the posts of Prime Minister, President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Ministers, Deputy Ministers and members of committees of associated Ministries. The selected members were then administered the oath to fulfill their responsibilities. The Children’s Parliament session, presided over by the President and the Prime Minister jointly and Educators as representative of the Learners. Some issues like Child Marriage, Tree Plantation Policy, Women’s Safety, Medicine problem in village, Cleanliness etc were discussed in the session and solutions were found through mutual discussions and brainstorming. When a Learner shares the stage with his teacher as the head of his cabinet, it enhances his/her confidence and leadership skills. They are disciplined and have developed a sense of belonging to school. This has led to creation of a healthy, constructive learning environment and improvement in the quality of Learning.
The informative session was very helpful for Learners and helped them learn about their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the world.
