The Science-Mathematics Fair is an event organized by the Gajera Vidhyabhavn school, Utran that gives students an opportunity to experience the practice of science and engineering for themselves. In the United States, the Next Generation Science Standards recognize the practice of science and engineering as one of the three pillars of science education. Students conduct some type of research and then present their experiment in a poster session or other display format.
In America, science fairs were started in New York City in the 1930s under the auspices of a civic organization called the American Institute of the City of New York by Morris Meister, who later founded the Bronx. High School of Science.
Mr John believed in Dewey’s educational ideas which focus on doing rather than learning what has already been done. The goals of the After-School Science Club Federation were twofold. “To help develop the next generation of scientific leaders and at the same time promote a better understanding of science among its general public”.
Initially, science fairs were mostly exhibitions and demonstration projects or just exhibitions of projects. This changed after the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Increasingly, science and engineering fairs are seen by many as a way to encourage and help students explore science and engineering career paths. The popularity of science fairs in the United States increased with interest in science in the 1950s, following the use of the world’s first two atomic weapons and the introduction of television. As the decade progressed, science stories in the news, such as Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine and the launch of Sputnik, brought science fiction to reality and attracted students at all levels to fairs.
The Science and Engineering Fair attracts students at all levels—elementary, middle, and high school—to compete in science and technology activities. Science fairs can also allow students with a strong interest in science to connect with mentors from nearby colleges and universities, giving students access to instruction and tools that local schools do not offer. Along with coaching students for their science fair interviews, this guidance has been shown to be critical to student success.
Most countries have regional science fairs that interested students can freely participate in. Winners of these regional fairs send students to national fairs such as the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) and the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF). National science fairs usually send winners to international fairs like ISEF (which is a national and international science fair) and EUCYS. Currently, the Regeneron Science Talent Search sponsored by the biotechnology company offers a grand prize of $250,000 in scholarships. The 2018 documentary chronicles the Science Fair competition.
GCERT, Gandhinagar Prerit District Education and Training Bhavan, Surat. Science Exhibition-2023 (Vedvyas Complex – 5) organized by the Office of the District Education Officer, Surat and School Development Complex – 5 was organized at Gajera Vidya Bhavan, Uttran. In which more than 80 works were presented by the children and their skill style was presented to the public and a Mathematical Science Fair was organized beautifully.
As a guest in this program, Dr. Janaksinh Rathore who is Senior Scientist of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Prof. K. C. Poria, H.O.D. Physics Department, VNSGU, Surat, Dr. Chetan R. Patel, Prof. SVNIT, Surat, Dr. Vinodbhai, Prof. CDC, VNSGU, Surat attended and made the program a success. All the child scientists and mentor teachers who participated in the exhibition were felicitated. Also inspiring speeches were presented to make every student/social science aware and adopt a scientific approach in life. Selected works were honored with toffee and certificate.
